St Vincent’s Private Hospital East Melbourne (SVPHEM) is located at 159 Grey Street, East Melbourne. It is surrounded by another private hospital and exclusive residential properties. The ongoing safe operation of the hospital was the primary consideration from the outset of the project. As the project had multiple work fronts throughout the hospital, various programme modifications were implemented to ensure hospital operations were not impacted.
We worked collaboratively with the Nurse Unit Managers and Engineering department to reduce the risks of infection control, noise, vibration and service disruption across all work areas. The site posed a number of other construction challenges, including an asbestos membrane screed on the roof of Level 4 which needed to be removed in a negatively pressured environment. Our team worked closely with SVPH to develop a safe work plan that resulted in the safe removal of 1,600, 44-gallon drums of asbestos contaminated screed from the roof of the hospital.
The main project included an extension of the existing building to house a new rehabilitation ward, with works within the building for urodynamic suites, day oncology, pathology, sleeps studies, paediatrics and infrastructure upgrades.
